If the caravans don't reach your destination city it can't prosper (prosperous villages and clean caravan routes are most important I think). I originally when i was still with the swadians. I'm lord of my own faction, the capitol is Dhirm. Plus, doing tasks increases the village's prosperity, resulting in more income. Send the companions on missions to increase your right to rule.
